This beer, which is a hundred years old, is not based on any known category of beer. It is a strong beer, in particular through a mellow aroma. Its content is low on hops, and its bitter-sweet taste, which makes it at the same time resemble a traditional Flemish brown ale while retaining its vinous tone, is essentially du the presence of a caramel malt and coriander.
Het Anker Brewery still brews "The Emperor's Beer" which is of guaranteed top fermentation and bottle conditioning following traditional methods. Its high gravity (O.G. 1080-85) combines the warmth of wine and the freshness of beer. Gouden Carolus is one of the strongest and most exciting beers in the world. After lengthy maturing and conditioning, it is bottled unfiltered, giving a beer which is rich in vitamins and 100% natural. Gouden Carolus has unlimited storage (it even imporves with age) and will charm you with its warm coppery colour and its rich bouquet.

Head is initially large, frothy, off-white, mostly lasting. Body is hazy dark amber, dense tiny particles, bottle conditioned. Aroma is moderately malty (caramel, cookie, light bread), lightly hoppy (flowers), lightly yeasty (cobwebs), with notes of coriander, apricot, hint of alcohol. Flavor is moderately sweet, moderately bitter, moderately acidic. Finish is moderately bitter, moderately acidic. Medium body, creamy texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic. Very nice malty/fruity ale.

This blond beer was brewed in honour of the court of the Emperor Charles The Fifth, united in rigour, nobility and splendour. Its refined character, with a pure and rich taste, will captivate you. It is matured at length in cellar and bottle, and is guaranteed to be brewed only from pale malts. It is traditionally top-fermented and is 100% pure.
Great big frothy head. Lasts for a while. Slightly creamy on top. Good carbonation. Nice soft aroma with peaches, bit of spice (corriander), yeast . Color is a nice golden orange. Slightly sweet and malty. Good bit of spice and alcohol warming. Soft mouthfeel. Finish is clean, slighly bitter and has a nice alcohol warming. SLight spice in there also. A very good triple.

Then it rests for several months to obtain a optimal balance in taste and flavours. Specific herbs are added in the different stages of the brewing process. Three different kinds of hops, and 6 different kind of herbs and spices make this Christmas beer a ‘special class’.
