Abbaye Bonne Espérance 8°-1/3L

Abbaye Bonne Espérance 8°-1/3L
Ref: BB20018

Clear gold-brown colour and fine bubbled medium head. Delicate fragrant floral hops and faint chicken yard yeasty aromas. Medium to full bodied yeasty flavour. Balanced but a rather soft bitter-sweet palate with not that much jingling the oral nerve endings. Shortish, smooth, balanced finish. Best feature - aroma, poorest is the flavour

Abbaye des Rocs 9°-1/3L

Abbaye des Rocs 9°-1/3L
Ref: BB20074

Abbaye des Rocs (9% alcohol vol.) is a pure malt beer, with no added sugar. The entire range of tastes is directly linked to the double fermentation, the precise quantities of malts (7 types) as well as the mixtures of three kinds of hops (Belgian, German and Czech). Its colour is a striking deep and majestic red. Its taste is rich and full of subtlety. It is tasted like a red wine with which it shares the ruby colour without having the tannin. It develops a strong sweet smell. It confirms the initial impression in the first mouthful, with a sharp body that is balanced with a certain fruitiness. It frees itself on the palate and develops an impressive depth of taste. Some traces of burnt wood are detectable, but never scorched even if it contains this kind of malt. The foretaste is very prolonged because of its rich and unctuous development throughout the mouth. The bitter and sugar tendencies (even though there is no sugar in its composition) compete and come back together to the taster's great satisfaction. It is a deep, mystic and extremely mature beer to be classed among the great products of our soil.

This is an unfiltered organic Belgian ale from this well-respected artisan brewery, better known for their classic Saison. It has a lumpy, rocky head and a pleasing pale golden colour. The nose is a complex blend of spices and fruit - coriander, cinnamon, vanilla, pepper, figs, and a hint of toffee. In the mouth there are lots of phenols and esters adding lightness to the texture, with complex spicy malt and a subtle burning strength in the back of the throat. However, the strength is well disguised on the tongue - it is smooth and not too lively (despite the 'pop' when pulling the cork). Aftertaste is long, zesty, malty and spicy. This is far and away the most interesting organic beer we have so far reviewed (as of 5 November 1998) - well deserving of its World Beer Championships Top 10 award (even if this isn't as prestigious as it sounds).

Very intense aroma of yeast, spices and fruit (oranges and bananas). Hazy, orange-yellow coloured with a lasting, white frothy head. Taste differs much from the aroma. Initial round and sticky taste. Malty (roasted coffee malts), fruity (lemon/citrus), yeast and hopbitterness combined with some light sourness in the finish. Dry palate. Quite an interesting and decent brew.

Famous for their Saison Ale, Brasserie Dupont is also renowned in Belgium for their Moinette. This sturdy ale has an herbal bouquet that indicates its well hopped character. But unlike its drier cousin, its body is fuller and rounder with a slightly sweet finish. Delicious before a meal and with foods like marinated meats and barbecue.
Dupont's beers are full of life, and notable for their hop character, with East Kent Goldings to the fore. They have a big, rocky, creamy, head; a sharp, firm, refreshing, attack; a restrained fruitiness; and a long, almost tangibly dry, finish. They are beautifully-balanced, complex, examples of truly artisanal brewering. Michael Jackson - Great Beers of Belgium

Vichtenaar 5,1° - 1/4L

Vichtenaar 5,1° - 1/4L
Ref: BB28249Z

Vichtenaar is a beer, brewed with roasted malts, spicey hops, fruity yeast and soft water, pumped up from a 172 m deep well, guaranteeing constant quality and pureness of the liquor. After primary and secondary lagering, Vichtenaar gets a ternary fermentation in oak vessels during 8 months. These oak pipes are big tuns with a capacity varying between 500 and 2500 hectolitres. Vichtenaar is a traditional and specific Western Flemish beer, from the northwest of Belgium. Its taste can be described as mild-sourish and suitably complex, thanks to the long lagering on oak. This tart flavour makes it eminently suitable for the hot summer months. “Vichtenaar” is one of the last Flemish ''Oud bruins'' that are really lagered in the oak tuns, and are as such appreciated by the connoisseur, looking for authenticity. As early as 1958 ''Vichtenaar'' was crowned as the top in an international concours in Gent.

Beer pours gorgeous mahogeny with a nice thick tan colored head that mostly dissipates. Aroma is rich with malt and dark dried fruits, i.e. figs and raisins, also light yeastiness and spices. Flavor yield a bit less than the promise of the aroma. Flavors of sweet malt, light yeast, and light spices are present. The finish is dry. This was quite enjoyable.

Full body - staying head - amber colour with a spicy, malty palate that finishes very fruity with complex hoppy undertones. Extremely pleasant to drink during lengthy conversations. Brewed along a 700 year tradition! FOOD COMBINATIONS: goes very well with spicy food (fish or meat.) The hot spicy food (Cajun, Mexican, Oriental ...) is pleasantly cooled down by this wonderful beer. The hops also help the digestion. Delicious with cheeses. This beer has a huge head, so pour slowly (takes about 5 min.) The nose is typically brown ale and the flavor is chocolate (not a sour brown). The flavor is rather bland at refrigerator temperature, but becomes more full as the beer warms. Pair with Corsendonk Agnus (abbey pale ale) for a chocolate/ vanilla experience. Goes well with a cigar, if you are so inclined.
